How To Get Rid of Bed Bugs in Chicago

Over the past few years there has been a surge in the number of bed bug infestations being reported in the Chicago area.

How do you know if you have a bed bug problem?

Sometimes people wake up with a small bite which wasn’t there before they went to sleep.

Other folks may not have any reaction to a bed bug bite at all.

So detection can be frustrating, especially when the bed bug has just arrived and has yet to leave any evidence except a bite!

Another way to detect bed bugs is to look for staining on bedding, mattresses or sofas. The stains appear as small spots or streaks and are dark to black in colour.

To discover more about this problem – and how to get rid of bed bugs effectively – I spoke with a pest control professional who specializes in bed bug treatment, Michael Manning of Resolve Pest Solutions in Chicago…

Is there a bed bug problem here in Chicago?

MM: “Yes! There have been a number of stories in the news recently about bed bug infestations in Chicago theaters, retail stores and other places where people gather in addition to the home. Bed bug problems started appearing in greater numbers in 2006. Prior to that time, bed bug calls to us were very rare. By 2007, as many as one in four calls involved bed bugs, and the numbers are growing because they can be carried by people from one place to another.”

]]>

What’s the most common sign – is it bites from bed bugs?

MM: “Yes, many people first become alerted after noticing a small itchy bite mark. Staining on bedding is a common sign also.”

How can you be certain that you have a bed bug infestation?

MM: “Detecting bed bugs presents a unique challenge because their bites affect different people in different ways. It is not uncommon for just one member of the family to be experiencing bites, while other members of the family appear to go unbitten. This can go on for months, during which no other evidence of bed bugs can be directly observed. During this time period, the infestation is not known with 100% certainty, so it’s advisable to have a bed bug inspection by a pest control professional who specializes in bed bug extermination.”

How do you kill bed bugs permanently?

MM: “Exterminating bed bugs can be achieved in a number of ways and with a small number of visits. Sometimes only a chemical treatment will do. For example, the use of heat and steam to kill bed bugs can be costly and sometimes ineffective. Using the right chemical can minimize the number of treatments. With the use of carefully applied chemicals, it is possible to eliminate most levels of bed bug infestations in one or two visits.”

Tips on getting rid of bed bugs…

1 – Because bed bugs may hitch a ride with you, continue to sleep in your own bed to avoid infesting other parts of your home.

2 – Isolate your bed and call a licensed Pest Control Operator who specializes in bed bugs to treat your home.

3 – After treatment, watch for any signs and contact your pest control operative if they reappear.

Remember

- bed bugs are not easy to eradicate completely unless you know what you’re doing, so get qualified professional help.
- if your chosen pest control professional treats your premises and you are still being bitten, don’t assume that it’s their fault. It often takes a number of treatments to completely resolve the problem.
- if you do see more bed bugs or continue to be bitten, call the pest control company for another treatment.

Finally, don’t worry…

With professional treatment, the bites will decrease and disappear completely along with those pesky little bugs.

Bed Bug Outbreak is Getting Out of Control

Pick up any newspaper or browse though any of the local online news markets under the health section, and one of the most relevant topics that comes up is;  Bed Bugs.

High end hotels and boutiques, schools, government offices….it seems that nowhere has been impervious to these infestations.

These nasty little pests have made quite a comeback in the U.S. and the outbreak of infestations is steadily on the rise.

With Bed Bugs increasing over 500 percent in the last few years according to the National Pest Management Association, protecting your mattress and box spring with a proven, secure encasement is a critical step in keeping your environment bed bug free. We put this Faq together to educate you about Bed Bugs and how to protect those you care about from these pests.

What are Bed Bugs?

Bed Bugs are small, oval-shaped, non-flying insects that belong to the insect family Cimicidae. Nymphs (juveniles) can be as small as 1.5 mm, while adults can grow to 5-7 mm in length.

What do Bed Bugs look like?

Bed Bugs have small, flat bodies. Nymphs are clear in color and appear bright red after feeding. Adult Bed Bugs are reddish brown, appearing redder after feeding. Fully engorged Bed Bugs bear little resemblance to their original state and are often thought to be a different insect altogether.

Where are Bed Bugs found?

Bed Bugs can be found in poor sanitation conditions, as well as in clean environments. Crowded living quarters also facilitate the spread of Bed Bugs. Bed Bugs can live in any area of the home – in tiny cracks in furniture, as well as on textiles and upholstery, though they tend to be most common in areas where people sleep, generally concentrated in beds, mattresses, box springs and bed frames – not on the sleeping surfaces.

]]>

Bed Bugs often reside in curtains, edges of carpets, corners inside dressers, cracks in wallpaper and inside the spaces of wicker furniture.

How do Bed Bugs feed?

Bed Bugs feed by sucking blood from humans and animals. Bed Bugs feed on the blood of human beings but can suck blood from other animals as well. Birds and mice are the most common animals. Bed Bugs most often feed at night time when people are asleep. Bed Bugs are attracted by both warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, which is what we exhale in breathing. The bugs climb up onto skin and pierce with two hollow tubes, one of which injects anti-coagulants and anesthetics. The other tube is used to withdraw blood, feeding for about five minutes before returning to their hiding places. When they feed, they inject a salivary secretion into the wound to prevent coagulation.

How long do Bed Bugs live?

A well fed bedbug can live anywhere from four to six months, while a dormant one might live without feeding for up to 18 months.

How are Bed Bugs spread?

Bed Bugs spread by crawling from any article of furniture, clothing or bedding to another and laying eggs. Bed Bugs may also be present in boxes, suitcases, or other goods that are moved between residences or from a hotel to a home. Because Bed Bugs can also live on clothing from infested homes, a person wearing infested clothes can also facilitate the spread.

What are the signs/symptoms of bed bug bites?

There may be a cluster of bites instead of singular ones, and this is typically caused by disturbing the bugs while they feed, causing them to detach and return to feed momentarily. The bites can be found just about anywhere on your body, with exposed bits of skin being the preferred feeding ground for the bugs, making your face a target along with arms and legs. Small, flat, or raised bumps on the skin are the most common sign; redness, swelling, and itching commonly occur

The best way to keep your mattresses bed bug free, is by purchasing Bed Bug Mattress covers or mattress encasements.  There are a few companies around that offer mattress encasements that are 100% guaranteed impervious against bed bugs.  Sadly, once your mattress had become infected with bed bugs, there is nothing you can do but have the mattress destroyed and have your domicile fumigated, which is quite costly and poses health risks of its own.  While mattress covers and mattress encasements do not guarantee that your home will remain bed bug free, they do guarantee that your mattress will not be infected and greatly decreases the chances of a full infestation.

Wasps Nest Removal: Home Made Remedies

Wasps are known to create havoc mostly in the urban areas where they build nests in the corners of roofs, attics, walls etc. These insects are found in different shapes, sizes and behavior. Some of the species are considered to be very harmful, and their stings cause painful swelling, and skin allergies in some cases. Hence it makes sense to get wasps nest removal done before it poses any threat to your family. There are several home remedies and professional treatments available for eradicating the nests.

Trap and kill them:

If you have wasp nests around your property, you must first prevent them from entering inside your home. Trapping the insects is one of the most effective methods known. With the help of discarded materials, you can easily trap these little devils. These insects have an affinity towards sweet foods so you can use them as your bait. Fill up an old container with fruit juice and place a piece of raw meat inside it. Now keep this in the garden for the insects to get attracted.

]]>

The odor emitting from the juice and meat will attract the insects instantly. As soon as they enter the container, they will get drowned into it, and eventually die. You can select the size of the container depending on your requirement. For achieving the best results, keep changing the liquid used as the bait. This works as an effective home remedy to kill the insects.

Home made remedies:

The nests are usually made of wood fiber, hence many people attempt burning or flooding them. However, this will only make the insects more aggravated, and they make attack you. When planning to carry out nest removal at home, there are two common methods that you can apply – ground wasps nest removal process and the aerial wasps nest removal process. In either case, you must take all safety measure to protect yourself from the deadly stings. Furthermore, always attempt removing the nests during the dark when the insects are drowsy.

When the nest is at the ground level, you can consider pouring a solution of soap and water into the nest. This will wipe out the ground nest. After this, you must seal the entrance properly with heaps of soils to make sure that the remaining insects die out eventually. The aerial nests can be found in trees or under the eaves. To remove the aerial wasps nest, you must ask your helper to carry a large plastic bag or box just underneath the nest. Carefully cut the stem of the nest to completely separate it from the point of attachment, and trap in inside the bag. Now, immerse the bag into a tub or water and then place it inside a freezer to kill all insects effectively.

However, the above mentioned wasps nest removal methods should be carried out only if you and your helper have the required experience. Otherwise, it is recommended that you call a professional to eliminate it effectively.
